2006 MAKE ME A MAESTRO FUNDRAISER

Many thanks to our candidates for the 2006 Make Me a Maestro event! They were: Don Wandling, Deb Fennelly and Dr. Ken Talbert. Our second Make Me A Maestro was a huge success! Thanks to everyone's generous support, Make Me a Maestro generated more than 20,000 votes (dollars)!

This is an amazing show of support. Some of the funds have already been put to good use -- a part-time person to handle many of the duties associated with a growing symphony program.

The winner, who earned the chance to conduct the orchestra during our lApril 2006 was Dr. Ken Talbert. He did a fine job, and agreed that it was the thrill of a lifetime.

Thanks again to everyone who participated in this FUN-raiser. If you would like to be a candidate for our next Make Me a Maestro, let us know by contacting one of the board members.

What Don Wandling has to say

Don Wandling is president of Wandling Engineering in Ames.

Don has enjoyed the symphony as a member of the audience and as a financial supporter for many years. He says his fundraising strategy is a secret, but admits he plans to approach all of his friends, neighbors and colleagues.

"I'm going to promote all three candidates. But if people vote for me, my smile isn't bad, my heart will be in the right place and I don't think I can mess the symphony up too much.

"The symphony is a great asset for the community. It's a wonderful opportunity for all people, and especially for young people, to further their fine musical talents."

  4. I'm tall enough so that when I stand on the podium, the brass section can see me.
  5. I know that good coaches always listen to the music of their players.
  6. Because of my family's hectic schedules, I know how to "orchestrate" my time.

  9. I know what the word symphony means. It means "sounding together".

A few words from Candidate Talbert

Talbert is an ophthalmologistat McFarland Clinic in Ames

"Why me for Maestro? First a great sense of rhythm and timing. I am a virtuoso with the cowbell, the harmonica and a magical keyboardist with the physician’s band, “The Specialists.”

"Second, I can conduct myself in all manner of professional and personal tasks – so these fine musicians should be a breeze in comparison.

"I am known to many in central Iowa as “Mother Ginger.” Ten years ago while operating at Mary Greeley Hospital, one of our nurses bemoaned the lack of adult male interest in performing the Nutcracker ballet. Severely occupied at that moment, looking through the microscope, and in a moment of questionable judgment, I said I would join the cast so long as I could be Mother Ginger.

"I forgot about the whole matter, and the auditions came and went without notice, when lo and behold I received a letter assigning me several roles in the production. Being a good sport, I accepted the responsibility I had only committed to in jest. Ten years of Mother Ginger attest to my tenacity and talent. I offer as much to this fine orchestra in the spirit of fine art.

"The ultimate message is – VOTE!! A vote for any of this unlikely trio is a vote for these fine local artists and their gift to our community and our own precious souls. Please give generously to the Central Iowa Symphony."
