The students were selected following the symphony's annual Young Artists Auditions at Iowa State University. Central Iowa Symphony has had a long tradition of showcasing talented young string players who perform a concerto selection with the orchestra. Five years ago, the audition process was expanded it to include performers of wind, brass and percussion instruments, pianists and vocalists. Eleven students auditioned January 15, and three were selected to perform with the symphony during its annual family concert program. They are: o Neil Anderson, cello, a senior at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and student of Sandra Tatge, performing Haydn's "Concerto in C Major"; o Erika Boysen, flute, a junior at Valley High School in Des Moines and student of Kimberly Helton, performing "Concerto" by Gordeli, and o Alan Zhou, violin, a fifth grader at Terrace Elementary School in Ankeny and student of Jonathan Sturm, performing the first, second and third movements from "Ziegunerweisen" by Pablo de Sarasate. Judging the auditions were CIS concertmaster and ISU music professor emeritus Larry Burkhalter; ISU music professor William David, and ISU orchestra director James Hannon. All students who auditioned received written comments and a critique designed to improve their performances. "The other judges and I were really impressed with the level of artistry of all the young performers," said Hannon, who also will conduct the CIS concert. "Our three selected Young Artists are to be congratulated, along with their parents and teacher, for their accomplishments. It's a credit to their hard work and dedication, and I think it's going to be a fantastic concert!" The February 27 concert, "A Family Vacation," will begin at 3 p.m. at Ames City Auditorium.
