Central Iowa Symphony welcomes guests April 29
AMES, Iowa -- With a guest maestro and a guest
soloist, plus a tribute to an Iowa-inspired
composition, members of the Central Iowa Symphony
have a full round of activities for their season
finale April 29 in Ames.
The symphony welcomes David Peshlakai, principal
cellist with the Kalamazoo, Michigan Symphony, to
the stage for what is expected to be an
unforgettable performance of Schumann's Cello
Concerto.
Also taking the stage will be the winner of the
symphony's Make Me a Maestro fundraiser. Deb
Fennelly, Ken Talbert and Don Wandling of Ames have
been campaigning for CIS contributions – and a
once-in-a-lifetime chance to conduct the orchestra
for one piece during the final concert of the CIS
season.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April
29, in Ames City Auditorium.
"If you've ever heard Schumann's Cello Concerto, you
will never forget it," said CIS conductor James
Hannon. "He composed it in just two weeks for his
beloved wife, Clara, and it features a duet with the
principal cellist. Sadly, Schumann never heard it
performed."
Peshlakai teaches cello and keeps an ambitious
performance schedule that includes concerts
throughout the United States, Great Britain, France
and Germany. He also is a longtime colleague of
Hannon from the days when they were students at
Michigan State University.
CIS will perform Antonin Dvorak's Ninth Symphony,
"From the New World." The well-known composer wrote
his most popular work after spending a summer in the
Czech-speaking community of Spillville, Iowa. Its
premiere in Carnegie Hall December 1893 received
much acclaim.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for seniors (ages 65
years or older) and $5
for students of all ages. Tickets will be available
at the door or before the concert at Big Table
Books, Rieman Music and Keeper's Music of Ames.
Credit card orders available at Ames City Auditorium
office, (515) 239-5360.
Concert Conversations, an informal discussion with
Maestro Hannon about the program, will begin at 6:45
p.m. in the Ames City Council Chambers.
