Music Director Mark Laycock will lead the program. Selected by audition in January, the young artists will perform selections from standard concerto repertoire. Laycock will lead Concert Conversations, an informal preview of the program, beginning at 2:15 p.m. Blake Hinson, 14, of West Des Moines, will perform the first movement of Dragonetti's Concerto in G Major for String Bass and Orchestra; Kevin Judge, 16, of Des Moines, will perform the first movement of Mozart's Bassoon Concerto in Bb Major; Hangyul Kim, 16, of Ames, will perform the final movement of Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3 in B Minor; Hannah Park, 16, of Ames, will perform the first movement of Kabalevsky's Violin Concerto in C Major; and Jonathan Park, 17, of Ames, will perform the first movement of Creston's Concertino for marimba and orchestra. "We have an outstanding array of soloists this year," Laycock said. "The program features a wonderful variety of instruments and compositions, performed by five of central Iowa's most accomplished young virtuosi. You will be amazed at their professionalism, technical prowess, and mature musicianship." Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors (age 65 and older), and $5 for students. Tickets will also be available at the door (telephone orders taken at 515-239- 5360) The Central Iowa Symphony is a 65-member community orchestra comprised of professional musicians, music educators, exceptional student performers, and accomplished amateurs from Ames and central Iowa. The Young Artists concert will conclude the symphony's 16th season. Free summer pops concerts are planned June 28 in Ames, June 29 in Boone, and August 16 in Marshalltown. The summer program, "Give My Regards to Hollywood," will feature favorites from stage and screen. About Our Young Artists Blake Hinson, 14, started playing string bass in the fourth grade public school music program. He began private instruction with Phil Peters in fifth grade and has attended several music camps. In seventh and eighth grade, he participated in the Junior High All-State Orchestra. Now a freshman at West Des Moines Valley High School, he was second chair in the Iowa All-State Orchestra. Currently, he plays string bass in his school orchestra, double bass in the school jazz band and tuba in concert band. He also has studied guitar under private instruction since he was six years old. Kevin Judge, 16, began his study of music in second grade, taking private lessons in piano. In fifth grade he added alto saxophone, and in sixth grade started private lessons in bassoon with Susan Beach, with whom he has been studying the past five years. As a seventh grader he performed with the Iowa Youth Philharmonic and Iowa Youth Chamber Orchestra. Now a sophomore at Dowling High School, he still performs with the two orchestras, is a member of his school's marching, concert and jazz bands, plays for various church ensembles and the Des Moines Community Jazz Band, and gives private music lessons for children. The past two years he has been selected for the Iowa All-State Orchestra where he was first chair. This past summer he studied under Frank Battasti at Tanglewood academy in Massachusetts. Hangyul Kim, 16, most recently was the featured youth soloist with the Des Moines Symphony. As grand prize winner of the Des Moines orchestra's young artists competition, she will receive a full scholarship to attend the Interlochen summer music camp. In 2001, she performed with the Fort Dodge Area Symphony as the winner of its young artists competition. She has studied violin for a number of years, at Yale University when she was living in Connecticut, and currently a student of Mahlon Darlington at Iowa State University. A junior at Ames High School, she has been selected for the Iowa All-State Orchestra the past three years. Hannah Park, 16, has played violin with the Central Iowa Symphony the past two years. Born in New Jersey, she moved to Korea when she was three years old and began piano lessons at age six and violin lessons at age 10. When she moved to Ames in 1998, she had stopped taking music lessons, but has been studying violin with Jonathan Sturm the past two years. A junior at Ames High School, she has been selected for the Iowa All-State Orchestra the past two years. She also participates in the school orchestra, church, and many other events in a trio with her siblings. Not only does she play violin, she enjoys playing flute, piano and harp. Jonathan Park, 17, started percussion four years ago when he joined the school band. He began private instruction a year later with Barry Larkin at Iowa State University and is a third-year student. His music study, however, started in Korea where he studied cello for eight months. He also has studied piano with his mother, Helen Park, for four years. A junior at Ames High School, he participates in concert band, orchestra, a percussion ensemble, and a church band. This year he was selected for the Iowa All-State Orchestra where he played timpani. The past three years he has received top ratings for marimba performances at solo and small group ensemble competitions. ##
